I guess I forgot all about this again. But now I have real news!
I don't know if everyone knows that our dining room is 'sunken'... 6 inches lower than the den and kitchen. It looks cool, yeah... but every time it rained, the dining room would flood. Seems when they converted that end of the house from a carport to a den/dining room, they thought it would be cheaper to just leave the floor in there as it was. Idiots.
So... we decided that it would be preferable to NOT flood every time it rained, so we hired a contractor to figure out how to fix it. Long story short, we're pouring concrete to fill in the dining room... after everything else in those 2 rooms that wasn't up to code was fixed! There were a LOT of hot wires just randomly tucked into walls, just laying there. There was a header that stopped a couple feet short of the wall it was supposed to tie into. There are SNAKE EGGS IN MY WALL!!! And a lot of old termite damage... old being the key word there. No new termite action. So... even longer story short.. we had to have ALL the walls ripped out, AND the ceiling ripped down (oh yeah, the decorative cedar beams in the den were pretty much just tacked in, if one of us had tugged on them for any reason, the entire ceiling was going to come down anyway) and we basically started building those 2 rooms from scratch again. Needless to say, all this doubled our cost.
BUT... today we got a floor. Next week, we'll have walls, too. And then, it's just going to be a matter of time before we have real ROOMS! As the contractor said to me today... we can't find anything else wrong, because it all came down, there's nothing else to find. Oh yeah, we're also getting all new windows, with real double pane glass in them. This ought to stop the wind from coming in the windows, maybe lower our cooling bill in the summer a bit! Pictures will be emailed all over when this is all done.
And that's what's going on.
